Description
This is a gorgeous and practical addition to your home — a hand-stitched placemat.
The design is Hana-zashi (flower stitch), a traditional Japanese sashiko pattern featuring continuous curving lines that intersect to form repeating six-petalled flowers. For this piece, I haven’t stitched every flower, instead leaving some white space to create interest and allow the pattern to breathe.
The top layer is sarashi muslin, stitched primarily with black thread and a lovely variegated thread in warm autumn tones. Look closely and you’ll also spot a few threads that are a little different — I’ve hand dyed them, making this placemat absolutely unique.
The placemat is finished with lightweight interfacing and backed with a beautiful textured dark cotton. Everything is 100% cotton, it can be machine washed and, like all hana fukin, will become softer and softer with use and washing. You can use it either way up.
Size: approximately 31 cm x 45 cm (tray sized!)
